EASY 3-Step Practice Method (This is how I Practice)
Practice.
We all have to do it. But what should we do during practice time? I get asked about practice ALL THE TIME and because of that, I figured I would break down my thought process on how I practice.
Before you get started, you should know the #1 rule of practicing:
Always have a plan before you sit down to practice.
The most important step is having a plan decided before you get into your practice room. This will assure you are focused and not getting distracted by making a game plan. All you should be doing in your practice time is executing. You can judge (away from your instrument) whether or not the plan is working and adjust from there.
So, as the video above talks about, the three categories I always tackle in my practice time are:
- Maintenance (warm up, technique, and speed exercises)
- Nitty-Gritty Work (method books, brand new material never covered)
- Musical Application (critical thinking and applying concepts to music)
