This transcription comes to you via a request I got yesterday. I was scrolling through Instagram and saw that @drum_fill_university had posted this video and people were asking for a transcription. I decided to transcribe it really quick. Eric Moore is such an incredible player, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to uncover a few of his secrets.

Eric is playing some pretty slick fills in this video, but the point of this excerpt was to demonstrate playing “chops” while maintaining 2 and 4 on snare. Keeping a back beat through your fills can allow you to get away with “playing more” without being distracting or losing the band (or more importantly the audience). It should be mentioned, that Eric Moore is an incredibly advanced player and what he can get away with as far as chops might not be what everyone can pull off.

Like all “chops”, if you aren’t serving the music with what you are playing…you fail. No matter what. But keeping a back beat on 2 and 4 as you stretch out is a great way of helping everyone listening keep up with what you are doing. Now you just have to…learn it.
