We all have them – those “go to” fills we pull out and they just feel like home. Those fills you don’t realize you are playing until halfway through playing them. The fills that you sometimes use…too much. In this lesson I’m breaking down my all-time favorite “go to” fills, and I really do think it is my all-time favorite fill.

There are several things that factor into this being my all-time favorite fill. It isn’t just that it is the most impressive fill I know, or the fastest, or the trickiest – it has shades of all those categories. This fill sounds fast, impressive, and a little tricky (even though it is made up of two groups of 3 and is actually super easy to play). It has those qualities, but the main reason I use this fill so much is because of how musical it sounds.

Don’t freak out. Yes, fills can be musical. Specifically with this fill, I feel the reason I can say it is musical is because it can fit in most genres of music without sticking out like a sore thumb. That isn’t the case for all fills. Some fills are VERY genre specific, and some fills exist in a time-continuum of their own and are only played to illicit the reaction, “wow that drummer thinks he’s hot stuff.” This fill has the rare ability to give you some flash and pizzazz without getting fired immediately and being left to pack up your gear while holding back your tears.
