3 Questions | Jazz Edition (Comping, Soloing, Quintuplets)

Lesson

The second edition of a new “3 Questions” series I’m trying out. If you don’t follow me on Instagram, how it works – I get on every now-and-then and ask you all to direct message me questions. The first 3 people that message me get their question answered and a shout out in the video I film answering whatever is asked.

I’m sure you have noticed the umbrella these questions all fall under, and it might have surprised a few of you. As many of you know, I live in Nashville and make a living playing country/pop music both live and in the studio. What some of you might not know – I also LOVE jazz. I don’t claim to be the greatest jazz player on planet Earth, but I have studied and played jazz for years. The most interesting professional experience I had playing jazz was living on an island for 2 months and playing jazz 5 hours a day with my best friends (but that story is for another day).

Anyway, what you’ll find in this video are three questions all based around playing Jazz. Below I’ve laid out what you asked and what minute markers you can find those questions at:

Question 1 (1:13) – Jazz comping.

Question 2 (6:15) – Trading 4s and soloing.

Question 3 (12:00)- sextuplets and quintuplets.

Thanks @nels.schulzke, @cameronsimons, and @adamdkramer for putting your questions out there! Can’t wait for the next 3 Questions video – be sure to follow me on Instagram (click here) so you can get a chance to have your question answered via YouTube. Remember, you can always email any questions to me (via email form below) to ask me anything on your mind.
